10.09.12 'Pretty Things' to be screened at Raindance.

My short film 'Pretty Things' will receive its world premiere at this year's Raindance Film Festival as part of the Official Selection. The Raindance Film Festival is one of the biggest and best film festivals in this country and has premiered films such as 'Pulp Fiction', 'Memento' and the 'Blair Witch Project'. It has been described by the Guardian as 'the indie-est film festival this side of the Atlantic'. Cool. Thanks to the cast, crew and Timothy Fox Clothing for making this happen.

It's also good news as 'The Last Man On Earth' was also accepted but I had to withdraw it from the festival as it had already had its London premiere.

For screening times click here.

1.09.12 British Films at DC Shorts

Just wanted to share an interesting article written about the British films being shown at the DC Shorts Film Festival. 'The Last Man On Earth' gets some nice coverage so check it out by clicking here.

7.07.12 'Every Time I Think of You' now online

The Heritage Lottery funded drama documentary 'Every Time I Think of You' that I directed for the Blue Print Theatre Company is now online. You can watch it via the Blue Print website or by clicking on the below and watching it via my Vimeo page. I think it's pretty good and for someone who usually writes and directs and is involved in every stage of the filmmaking process it was an interesting (and a lot less stressful) experience to just come in to direct the drama segments of the piece. See what you think.

24.01.12 Monday Night Picture Club

Had a great evening last night at the Monday Night Picture Club down at Cafe 1001 on Brick Lane. It was the first night of a new monthly film event being run by Kathrine Smith and Ari E Philips. 'The Last Man on Earth' and 'The Man Who Stopped' were both screened and got a very warm reception from the audience. I look forward to the next one.

13.01.12 'The Man Who Stopped' shortlisted

We were all very pleased to be shorlisted in December's Film of the Month on Shootingpeople. In case you're not familiar with the competition films uploaded each month are 'liked' by Shootingpeople members and the top three voted films are sent off and judged by a well known industry professional. For December, Andrea Arnold (Fishtank, Wuthering Heights) was judging the competition and she said this about the 'The Man Who Stopped': "I loved the man Derek. I really liked the still shots of him. I understood his desire to be still. The film was funny but made me very sad." This result marks the second time one of our films has got into the top three as in July 2011 'One Other Thing' won the competition when John Waters was judging. The winner for December I should add was Ed Lilly's 'The Hive' and our fellow runner-up was Jonathan Harris' 'The Cull'. Well done to you both.

9.01.12 Screen Social Screenings

As part of the 9th London Short Film Festival, the charity music vs film mash-up Screen Social will be spreading its mix of music promos, shorts, animation & experiments, with special showcases and live music guest spots. As part of their line up they will be screening 'One Other Thing' and 'The Last Man on Earth' on Thursday 12th Jan at the ICA and on Wednesday 18th at The Book Club so get along if you can. Details can be found here.

12.12.11 'The Last Man On Earth' at the 9th London Short Film Festival

So come along and check it out. The film will be screening as part of the New Shorts 13: God's Lonely Men, part 2 - Against Adversity programme, on Tuesday 10th January, 2012 at 20:45 at Riverside Studios. It's a great festival and apart from some quality shorts there's also an exciting program of activities available. Check them all out here.

03.12.11 'The Man Who Stopped' online

My short film 'The Man Who Stopped' is now online and on Shootingpeople. Give it a watch and if you're a shootingpeople member why not give it a 'like'?

27.11.11 Principal Photography completed on 'Pretty Things'

It's been a busy year and yesterday saw the completion of principal photography for my new short film 'Pretty Things'. Although a long day it was good fun and with a great team on board I hope to have it completed by early next year.

11.10.11 'Timothy Foxx' to fund my next short

I'm pleased to announce I have secured funding for my next short, 'Pretty Things', which is a dark comedy about a lonely old man desperate for some attention from his relatives. Helping me realise the project is 'Timothy Foxx', an ambitious, innovative and exciting clothes design company currently making waves in the fashion world.

The film is set to shoot in November with an exciting cast (who are all set to to wear some Timothy Foxx designs) and crew attached with the ambition to make a quality short and gain maximum exposure.

1.09.11 'She Wore Black' and 'The Last Man On Earth' screening

This Sunday (4th) come and catch 'The Last Man on Earth' and 'She Wore Black' which are being screened at The Antelope, in Tooting, London, as part of the Sunday Screenings. Free entry and tasty hot-dogs. The evening kicks off around 8pm.

26.08.11 'She Wore Black' music video

I took a foray into directing music videos recently when the band 'No More Navigators' asked me to make a video for their new single 'She Wore Black' which appears on their new EP 'Home' released by Tactal Hots from 29th August. The video was a pleasure to make and great fun. Check out the video here and buy the EP if you can.

4.08.11 'One Other Thing' voted Film of the Month on Shootingpeople by John Waters

Yes you did read that right. John Waters of 'Hairspray' fame and perhaps more infamously for getting actor Divine to eat dog-poo in 'Pink Flamingos' decided my film, 'One Other Thing', would be this month's Film of the Month on shootingpeople where he was this month's judge and which by all accounts is pretty darn cool. His comments were: "The hell of romantic break up told with a cringe invoking but recognizable-to-be-all sense of humor. Revenge is always embarrassing in hindsight and this film proves that point in a precise, punching way."

Read all the reviews here: http://tinyurl.com/ca6amd

A big slap on the back to the cast and crew.

Check out the film at shootingpeople here.

21.06.11 IndieMoviesOnline is no more

I got a rather sad email today informing me that IndieMoviesOnline was suspending operations. It has been the home for 'The Killers' for the last year or so and it's a shame to see a great independent site go like that. 'The Killers' is now viewable via Dynamo for the bargain price of $1.99 for seven days. Check out the home page for the link.

17.06.11 'The Last Man On Earth' on Virgin Media Shorts

My entry to the Virgin Media Shorts went up last night. You can take a look at here. I hope you enjoy it.

31.05.11 'One Other Thing' completed

Following hot on the heels of 'The Man Who Stopped' I'm pleased to announce the completion of 'One Other Thing'. The film is available to watch here.

23.02.11 'The Man Who Stopped' completed

'The Man Who Stopped', the short film we shot last year, is finally finished.

3.03.11 Principal Photography completed on 'One Other Thing'

With 'The Man Who Stopped' almost complete I thought I'd keep busy so I made another film. Shooting wrapped on 'One Other Thing' last week after a smooth and fun shoot with a great team of people. Shot on Canon 7D the footage looks great and with the edit already underway it's hoped the film shouldn't spend too much time in post-production.

17.01.11 'The Killers' screening and more

Just to let you know that 'The Killers' is going to be screened at The Antelope Bar in Tooting, London on Wednesday February 9th at about 8pm. It will be the first of a series of low budget independent films that will be shown in the screening room so it would be great if any of you can come along. Oh, and it's free!

This year also saw the launch of my Blog where I am not only furnishing you with more details about what I'm up to but also drawing your attention to other filmmakers who I reckon deserve more praise. Check it out.

2.01.11 Picture locked on 'The Man Who Stopped'

Just a quick update to let you know that we've finally locked the picture on my latest short film, 'The Man Who Stopped'. The film is now with the Colourist, Composer and Sound Designer. Thanks goes to the editor, Dan Roberts.

24.09.10 EMPIRE film competition

25.08.10 ‘The Killers’ gets record number of views

‘The Killers’, my debut no-budget feature available to watch for free at IndieMoviesOnline, seems to be going from strength to strength. Not only are we collecting some really nice reviews but I’ve just got the viewing figures in and for July and we had 3445 views of the film just in that month alone. Not bad.

16.08.10 ‘Smile’ at the East Dulwich Tavern

You really can’t keep an old dog down. ‘Smile‘, an early short of mine, is being screened this Thursday 19th August at the East Dulwich Tavern at an event called ‘Tavern Films’ which kicks off at 8pm and is the first of a regular screening night the bar is hopefully putting on. ‘Smile’ is being screened alongside some other great shorts so do try and come along.

14.07.10 Principal Photography completed on ‘The Man Who Stopped’

The lack of Latest News lately could imply that things have been rather quiet but it is actually the exact opposite. First of this website has had a facelift thanks to the help of Rob Langdon and over the last month or so I’ve also been hard at work getting a short film of mine to the screen. Aided by Antelope Sunday Screening collaborators, especially Damien Cullen, Phil Deguara and Andy Bate we completed filming on Sunday evening just in time to watch the end of the World Cup Final. The film was The Man Who Stopped and is a comic tragedy and a dark journey of the heart as one man faces ridicule and confusion for not conforming to the ‘normal grieving process’. More details to follow shortly!

21.05.10 ‘The Killers’ on DVD

‘The Killers’ is now available for sale and rental on IndieFlix. Indieflix is one of the largest online film distribution outlets in America and has a large following from the indie film community. So go on, buy a copy!

13.04.10 ‘Cut Loose’ read-through

Things are ticking along with one of my next projects, the feature length comedy ‘Cut Loose’. Next Monday there is a table reading at the Antelope bar in Tooting. For those of you unfamiliar with what a table reading is it’s when a bunch of actors read out the script whilst I take copious notes for another polish. An open discussion will also follow the reading so if you’d like to come along send me an email and I’ll let you know times.

25.03.10 ‘The Killers’ goes live

Check out my debut feature film at IndieMoviesOnline.

Indie Movies Online is fully legal: they license all the feature films they stream. When you watch free movies on Indie, you are supporting filmmakers. They pay royalties to people like me, which is why you see advertising on the site.

So go on, have a watch!

21.03.10 ‘Smile’ at the Antelope

First off a massive thanks to everyone who made the first Sunday Screening at the Antelope. The evening was a great success with some great shorts shown. The second event has now been organised and old favourite ‘Smile’ is to be screened at the Antelope Bar, 76 Mitcham Road, Tooting, SW17 9NG (Nearest tube: Tooting Broadway) on Monday April 5th (not a Sunday due the Bank Holiday). 17.11.08 Hero and Friend loses his life

Tragic news came through last week of the death of Neil Dunstan, Royal Marine and part of UK Landing Force Command Support Group. He was killed along with another Marine, Robert McKibben, on Wednesday 12 November by an explosion in the Garmsir District of southern Helmand, Afghanistan.

As well as a brave soldier he was also a good friend of Carlo Ortu’s and helped with the making of ‘Safe Zone’. Neil read the script prior to shooting to give some tips and also viewed the film after completion. Much to Carlo’s relief he enjoyed the film.

There is a lovely tribute to him on the Ministry of Defence website and a great Facebook tribute page.

Sympathies go out to his family and fiancé.

You will be sadly missed mate.
